SNK Arcade Classics review

I haven't written in a while, I know. I feel like making a new review now.

So earlier this weekend, I decided to go to my local library to see what shit they have. I found out to my surprise that you can now check out video games at the library. (the library I go to is Elk Grove Public Library) So I looked around the section for a little bit & I found SNK Arcade Classics vol.1 for the Wii. I decided to check out the game & soon after that, I walking home with excitement. Turns out the compilation isn't that great. SNK Arcade Classics has about 16 games & 1 of them must be unlocked. Let's see how good are some of the games on the disk, shall we?

Samurai Shodown (1993)- I already have it on Samurai Shodown Anthology. It's quite good obviously. The SNK Arcade classics version is censored to add injury to insult.

Fatal Fury (1991)- The controls are quite sloppy & the AI is quite ruthless. You can only pick as 1 of 3 characters.

Art of Fighting (1992)- Like Fatal Fury, the controls ain't so good. The AI is also kinda ruthless too.

King of Fighters '94 (1994)- I already have it on KOF Collection: The Orochi Saga for the Wii.

Shock Troopers (1997)- It's a really fun top-down run n gun similar to Metal Slug. You can either play as one character or have a team of 3. 8 playable characters in total.

Magician Lord (1990)- It looks so fun, yet your character moves so slow. The bad guy who talks smack at you at the end of every stage before you fight the boss at that stage has a wierd reverb effect in his voice on the SNK Arcade Classics version. He didn't have the reverb effect in his voice in the Neo Geo MVS, AES & the Neo Geo CD versions though.

Neo Turf Masters (1996)- Pretty much a golf game. With awesome music & made by Nazca, the company that has also worked on Metal Slug 1.

Metal Slug (1996)- Obviously very fun. You're pretty much a hermit in the gaming world if you don't know Metal Slug.

Burning Fight (1991)- A lame final fight ripoff, that's all you need to know.

Last Resort (1992)- It's ok I guess. I haven't given it full judgement yet.

Well, that's all the games that I played for now. The full list of games on the compilation is below:

Metal Slug
Fatal Fury
Art of Fighting
King of Fighters '94
King of the Monsters
Samurai Shodown
Sengoku
Shock Troopers
Top Hunter
World Heroes (Must be unlocked)
Super Sidekicks 3 (IT's a soccer game)
Neo Turf Masters
Last Resort
Burning Fight
Magician Lord
Baseball Stars 2

I'll post YouTube videos of the games on the next blog entry.

Video Games etc review

These days, few game stores are independent, fortunately a few of them exist in Chicago & the surrounding area. My favorite? Video Games etc, it's address is 4353 N Harlem Ave, Norridge, IL. I think is Norridge is really close to Chicago. Anyways, this store has been around since probably 2003-2005. I really really like this store. Why? You'll find out.

The 1st reason why I like that place & probably the reason I go there is their selection of games. Wow, everything from Magnavox Odyssey to possibly the Xbox 360 & the totally forgotten like the Atari Jaguar & the Neo Geo Pocket Color. They even have Neo Geo games in there. Last time I went to that store, I found for the Neo Geo; Fatal Fury 3, King of Fighters '97, Samurai Spirits, Blue's Journey, & a couple others. They have some JPN-only games like Final Fantasy V for example on the Super Famicom & Street Fighter 2 Championship edition on the PC-Engine.

The 2nd reason why I like Videogames etc is the internet cafe in the back. I assume it gets the attention of a lot of PC gamers in the area. Unfortunatly, you're bound to hear tons of trash talk.

Also, they have old videogame magazines & code books for sale. Pretty cool.

There're some cons as well. The store is kinda far from where I live so I don't go
there very often, but when I do, I take my sweet time to get a good look at the store. Also, I don't really like how the owner doesn't have an online store. I can't find anything else wrong with the store though.

In conclusion, an almost perfect store. If you live in Norridge or near the area, I suggest you check it out. Next time I go to that store, I think I'll get a 3DO & some of it's awesome games.

Score: A-

Yu-Gi-Oh!: The Eternal Duelist Soul Review.

Hello, this'll be my 2nd review in this blog. This time, it'll be on Yu-Gi-Oh!: The Eternal Duelist Soul. Many people don't like Yu-Gi-Oh! at all. To be honest, I don't watch the TV show anymore nor did I play the card game, but I think some Yu-Gi-Oh! games are great, & this is one of them. Originally came out in 2002 for the Game Boy Advance.

Story:

There's not really a story at all, well you're dueling against characters from the Yu-Gi-Oh! TV show, but the story is gonna get as deep as that.

Gameplay:

Basically plays like the Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG. If you know how to play, you should have no trouble at all in the beginning. If you don't know how to, ummmm, well, just play around until you're familar with it. I might edit the rules of the game in this blog post later so, don't worry. You can speed up the pace with the L button.

Graphics:

The cards in this game resemble real closely to their real life versions of the cards. Other than that, there isn't much to look at.

Sound:

The sound is ok, some tunes are catchy, but others are annoying. Not much to say here

Overall:

A very good game. It's a good way to play Yu-Gi-Oh! on the go without bringing your cards with. B

I didn't really have much to say in the review. Just watch the gameplay video.

Keep in mind that I didn't make this video nor do I own it!

Gex 64: Enter the Gecko review.

Hello boys n' girls. Today I will do a review on Gex 64: Enter the Gecko. Released around mid 1998 for the Nintendo 64. Gex 64 was a port of Gex: Enter the Gecko which was released on the PSX back in December 1997 I think. Even though Gex 64 had fewer bonus levels & one-liners than the PSX version, it was still a very good game, but why? Lets find out.

Spoilers AHOY!

Story: Rez is trying to take over TV & maybe the world too. Gex must stop him for
the 2nd time. (Gex: Enter the Gecko was the 2nd Gex game) An ok story.

Gameplay: The levels are somewhat like that of Super Mario 64 where each level has it's own objectives for you to complete such as locating & breaking 5 objects scattered throughout the level & reaching the end of the level. Collecting stuff is unlike that of a lot of games, there's 3 sets of collectibles that you can get on the level & they act like the "coins" of Gex 64. When you enter a level, you can only get the 1st set of collectibles at 1st, but when you collect 30 of them, the 2nd set of collectibles replaces the 1st set of collectibles, collect 40 of the 2nd set of them & you can get to the 3rd set of collectibles. You'll also gain an extra life every time you do this. The reward for completing objectives in a level usually rewards you with a red remote which acts like the "stars" of Super Mario 64, that is collect enough of them & you can gain access to the boss & new areas for you to explore & there's usually 2-3 red remotes within each level. There're also silver remotes which you can gain by collecting 120 collectibles or by finding 1 in a secret area of a level (hard to do.) & there's usually 2 silver remotes within each level. Lastly, there's gold remotes which can be gained by defeating a boss. I don't know which purpose they serve.

Graphics: Crystal Dynamics did such a good job at making the stages look like parodies of popular TV shows. There's some Cartoon stages, Kung-Fu stages, Haunted House stages, Space stages, & many more. They also made some of the enemies look like popular TV characters, not too closely to get the developers in legal trouble, but enough so you can tell if it's a parody or not.

Sound/Music: Gex's one-liners might be annoying to hear, but if you're so annoyed by it, just use the mute button on your TV remote. The music is pretty good, especially the hub theme. Sound effects also do a good job in this game.

Control: Not as sharp as Super Mario 64's, but still functional. The camera can be quite annoying unfortunately.

Overall: A very good game. I would give it a B+. Get it if you can find it.

Score: B+
